A citation is a formal reference made to a source which has been informed your own writing. It is essentially a way to give credit to author’s whose work you have included in your own papers. Citations gives your readers the necessary information to find the source such as the title of the work, the author/s’ name, date of publication and so on.
Citing sources is a great way to help your reader distinguish between your own ideas to those of your sources which in turn emphasizes on the originality of your work.
A citation is required when you
- Paraphrase the sources’ information
- Use quotations
- Summarize the work of someone
